It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the loss of our friend, Dr. Frank A. Pepe, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology. He passed away Tuesday, June 20th, 2023 at his home in Philadelphia, PA at the age of 92.
Dr. Pepe taught and conducted research in the Department of Anatomy (now Cell and Developmental Biology) for nearly four decades, eventually chairing the department for 13 years. Under his chairmanship, he strongly supported and improved the electron microscope and computer facilities. His research focused on the structure and assembly of myosin, the motor protein responsible for muscle contraction. His scientific accomplishments and career of service to the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine have helped shape the department as a whole.
The family has arranged for trees to be planted in Dr. Pepe’s memory. To have a beautiful tree planted, please visit the tree store. The Department of Cell and Developmental Biology will plant a grove of 50 trees in Dr. Pepe’s memory.
