Marisa Bartolomei will receive the 2024 March of Dimes Richard B. Johnston, Jr., MD Prize

Marisa S. Bartolomei, Ph.D.

We are absolutely delighted to announce that Marisa Bartolomei will receive the 2024 March of Dimes Richard B. Johnston, Jr., MD Prize (see https://www.marchofdimes.org/about/news/march-dimes-awards-marisa-bartolomei-phd-2024-march-dimes-richard-b-johnston-jr-md-prize). The March of Dimes award is given to truly exceptional scientists who have advanced our understanding of pregnancy, birth, and prenatal development. To appreciate how highly regarded the scientists are who receive this award, you need only look at the list of previous awardees, which includes giants in the field of developmental biology such as Allan Spradling, David Allis, Victor Ambros, Gary Ruvkin, Rudolf Jaenisch, Huda Zoghbi, Elaine Fuchs, Shinya Yamanaka, Cliff Tabin, Oliver Smithies, Robert Horvitz, and Ralph Brinster, among others (https://www.marchofdimes.org/sites/default/files/2023-09/Prize-Award-Recipients-Historical-List-updated-2023.pdf) .

Marisa is recognized for her groundbreaking work on the epigenetic mechanisms of imprinting, and how abnormal expression of imprinted genes can lead to severe developmental errors and diseases. She was an expert in epigenetics when it was still a niche area, well before the recent explosion of interest in the field. In addition to her outstanding scholarship, Marisa is also an exemplary citizen of CDB and the PSOM, and a dedicated mentor of junior faculty, postdocs, and graduate students alike. We are all incredibly lucky to have her as our colleague, and can be proud at what she has accomplished at Penn.

Please join us congratulating Marisa!
